Watch progress, logs, tasks and subscriptions
A server keeps talking while it works: progress notifications, log messages, task status, resource updates. mcp-tui shows each as it arrives.
Progress and server logs during a call
Section titled “Progress and server logs during a call”tool call sends a progressToken with every request and redraws the
latest notifications/progress on one stderr line. --server-log-level
asks the server for log messages at that level and prints each one:
mcp-tui --url http://127.0.0.1:8931/mcp --server-log-level info \ tool call escalate_ticket ticket_id=T-1041🚀 Executing tool...server log [info] acme.desk: escalate_ticket T-1041: Paging the on-call engineerserver log [info] acme.desk: escalate_ticket T-1041: Notifying the account managerserver log [info] acme.desk: escalate_ticket T-1041: Raising priority to urgent✅ Tool executed successfullyNotifications travel separately from the response, so the last log line can
arrive after the result has printed. On 2026-07-28 the log level rides in
every request’s _meta; on older versions mcp-tui sends logging/setLevel
once after connecting.
Run a call as a task
Section titled “Run a call as a task”With --task, tools/call returns a task handle and the result comes
later. --wait follows the task to its end and prints the result as a
direct call would; --watch-notifications shows each tasks/status on the
way:
mcp-tui --cmd mcp-server-everything --args stdio --watch-notifications \ tool call simulate-research-query topic="MCP transports" --task --wait🚀 Calling tool as a task...20:40:18.993 tasks/status working 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b: Gathering sources...⏳ Task 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b created; waiting for it to finish...20:40:19.995 tasks/status working 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b: Analyzing content...20:40:20.996 tasks/status working 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b: Synthesizing findings...20:40:21.998 tasks/status working 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b: Generating report...20:40:23.001 tasks/status completed 3ae8a0350031be62f90bda0bd825ec3b: Generating report...✅ Tool executed successfullyWithout --wait the command prints the handle and the task get /
task result commands to follow up with. See Tasks
for both wire forms (the 2025-11-25 experimental feature and the 2026-07-28
extension).
Follow a resource
Section titled “Follow a resource”mcp-tui --url http://127.0.0.1:8931/mcp resource watch acme://status/queue --count 3resource watch subscribes and prints one line per
notifications/resources/updated until --count updates, Ctrl-C, or an
explicit --timeout. On 2026-07-28 it listens on a per-URI
subscriptions/listen stream; before, it uses resources/subscribe.
In the TUI, s on the Resources tab watches the selected resource and the
Events tab lists every notification as it arrives.
